Louisiana Elementary Math Olympiad open to all 5th graders

Sep 11, 2019

All 5th-grade students in Louisiana are invited to the 10th annual Louisiana Elementary Math Olympiad, a paper-and-pencil test of mathematical skills, on Saturday, November 2 at Kenilworth Science and Technology School in Baton Rouge.

Students will compete for prizes, including gold medals, a 3D printing pen and an iPad Mini. The winning students' teachers also will receive gift cards. The event includes workshops that parents can attend while students are taking tests.

The event is free, but students must register at www.laemo.org. Registration deadline is Oct. 31.

Kenilworth Science and Technology School, located at 7600 Boone Avenue, is one of the top open-enrollment middle schools in Baton Rouge. Kenilworth started the Olympiad in 2009 and has hosted it free of charge every year.

"Just as we all celebrate student athletes' success, it is important that we support and encourage students in their academic interests," Kenilworth Executive Director Hasan Suzuk said. "This is always a great event, and we invite all Louisiana fifth-graders to join us on November 2."

This year's event will feature Gold Division winners and Platinum Division winners. The Gold Division refers to first 30 questions on the test, which will be grade-level questions based on Louisiana Student Standards. The Platinum Division refers to the second set of questions, which will include advanced problems designed to challenge the students.

The 25 students who score highest overall on the combined categories will receive certificates and medals for the Platinum Division. The top 25 students who did not place in the Platinum Division also will receive Gold Division certificates and medals.
In addition, the top four winners will receive:
Fourth place, a MineCraft Lego Set; student's teacher to receive $25 gift card
Third place, a 3D printing pen; student's teacher to receive $25 gift card
Second place, an Anki Cozmo robot; student's teacher to receive $50 gift card
First place, an iPad Mini; student's teacher to receive $50 gift card
The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pizza lunches will be available for $5.00, and the concession stand will be open for snacks.
