Kenilworth Urges EBR Board to Approve its Type 1 Charter Application

Jun 16, 2021

Kenilworth Science and Technology School urges the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board to approve its latest Type 1 Charter application to open a K-8 school within the East Baton Rouge School System. Kenilworth has issued a letter in a response to EBRPSS’s outside evaluator’s recommendation of denial as reported in a recent article published in The Advocate newspaper.

In the letter, Kenilworth points out that:
  • For more than a decade, it has been the only Type 5 conversion charter school in the Baton Rouge area that has operated successfully under the State’s Recovery School District;
  • Kenilworth is one of the highest performing among comparable public middle schools in the State;
  • Kenilworth is often compared to magnet and gifted schools;
  • Its proposed computer science model is highly innovative, offering a STEM education focused on computer science instruction—a unique program not found elsewhere in the EBR system.The EBR Board’s consultant rated Kenilworth’s application 93 out of 100.

Kenilworth’s letter to the Board further points out that Kenilworth performs very well academically, and explains that its recent “D” (one point short of a "C") letter grade is attributable to how the accountability system works and to the school’s 6-8 configuration. Kenilworth’s performance has been among the top comparable public middle schools in the State, with a LDOE progress index of 87.4 -a high B letter grade- last year (compared to a statewide average of 77-C letter grade).
