Oct 20, 2015

The Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools has honored Kenilworth Science and Technology School in Baton Rouge as the first-ever recipient of the Community Roots Award for the school's leadership in developing the Louisiana STEM Expo.

The award recognized Kenilworth for demonstrating "a commitment to community engagement" by building partnerships with businesses, industry groups, other schools, and government agencies to produce the Expo. Kenilworth received the award on October 12 as part of the charter school's statewide conference in Baton Rouge. Going into its fourth year, the Expo is entirely hosted and organized by Kenilworth to provide all Louisiana middle school students the opportunity to challenge themselves in science, technology, engineering, and math in a non-threatening, celebratory atmosphere. The Expo is made possible by partnerships with organizations such as the U.S. Navy, the Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance, Baton Rouge Area Chamber, the Black Alliance for Educational Options and LSU. "We're thrilled to present the Community Roots award to Kenilworth for their outstanding work in building key partnerships with organizations like LSU and NASA to increase access to and expand knowledge of STEM for their students, as well as students across the state," LAPCS Executive Director Caroline Roemer said. "LAPCS believes that meaningful community engagement is key to building great schools, and Kenilworth serves as a model of what can happen when schools and organizations partner in support of student success." Along with the award, the school received a $1,500 prize sponsored by Pearson. Kenilworth Science and Technology Charter School is a state-sanctioned charter school with an academic focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM. Formerly a part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, Kenilworth has demonstrated consistent academic growth since its conversion to a charter school in 2009.
